Activity #1

Linear Relationships

For this activity, you will find the linear relationship between two variables either by collecting your own data or by looking up data on the internet.  For one of the following (1-7 below) you will determine the linear relationship between the two variables.  Your final product should include the following:

a.  List the data points in a chart and graph them.

b.  Find the equation of the best-fitting line to the data.

c.   Graph the best-fitting line on the same set of axis as the scatterplot.

d.  Clearly identify the dependent and independent variables.

e.  Discuss the domain and range of your function.

f.    Discuss the meaning of the slope and the x- and y-intercepts.

1.      foot length vs. shoe size (for males or females)

2.       peak heart rate vs. age

3.       arm span vs. height

4.       height vs. shadow length

5.       grams of fat vs. calories

6.       length of rope vs. number of knots tied in it

7.       the height of children in lower school vs. their age
