The Broccoli Tapes

by Jan Slepian

Sara is able to communicate with her class back in Boston using a tape recorder. She shared her daily life and adventures with others. Now it is your turn. First, find a tape recorder that can record your voice. If you do not have one at home ask your teacher to find one for you. Next, you will need a blank tape. Again, if you do not have one around, ask your teacher for one. You do not need to buy anything for this project. The project will last for seven days. What you will create is a recorded journal. Each day try to find ten minutes or so to speak into the tape recorder. Try to talk about your day. You can talk about school, your hobbies, friends, family or anything you wish. Be sure to begin each recording with the day you are speaking about. Don't spend time erasing and editing the tape. The only one who needs to hear the tape is your teacher. If you have a particular part that you want to leave on the tape but you don't want anyone to hear simply tell the teacher which day it is. They will respect your privacy. Hand in the tape when the seven days are up. If you would like to continue the journal after the project is over simply ask for the tape back.
