REGISTRATION DEADLINE: Tuesday, January 26, 2010

FEE: $6.00

Dear colleagues,

I’m writing to announce that the EIGHTH ANNUAL WRITING COMPETITION will take place on Saturday, February 6th, 2010 from 10:30-11:30 a.m. Once again, St. George’s has been kind enough to open their school to administer the competition. All upper level high school students (juniors y seniors) who are currently studying in an advanced Spanish class (3rd, 4th, 5th year or AP) are welcome to attend, provided that their teacher is a member of AATSP-RI. Students will have several topics to choose from, and one hour to complete the essay. Last year’s divisions seemed to be a success, so we will continue to offer two awards for the top composition in each category: one for third year students, and the other for 4th year and above as well as a certificate of recognition for all participants. As has been the case for the last few years, we’ll also have a lottery on the day of the competition; all students who participate are eligible to win the prize. The cost is $6.00 per student.

This year we are offering a limited amount of waivers for students who are experiencing financial difficulties. This request needs to be made by the sponsoring teacher for no more than 2-3 per school via email to the chapter president Ms. Yamil Baez at ybaez@riaatsp.org . Requests will be honored on a first come, first serve basis and must be made by Wednesday, January 20, 2010.

If your students would like to join in, please fill out the form available below (print legibly) for each student and send it with the appropriate fee to Dr. Linda Crawford, at the address below, by Tuesday, January 26th, at the latest. (Checks or money orders, please). There will be no walk-ins accepted.

Questions from past years are available on this site (http://mb-faculty.mosesbrown.org/ybaez/RIAATSPHP.htm) so that students will have an idea of the sort of question that they’ll be answering.

Finally, an additional request, or plea, if you will. If you are available to help evaluate the essays and choose the winners, please indicate so on the form. Many of you may remember Norma; we use her system, are willing to help train any new members, and usually go through one or two together before beginning. The process maintains the students' anonymity, which is why I ask students to use the last four digits of their phone number. This way, the students remember their numbers, we have few duplicates, and the judging remains anonymous to ensure fairness.

The day of the competition, please have students bring a photo ID. The contest takes place between 10:30 and 11:30, so please plan on arriving 15 minutes early.

The members of the AATSP-RI Board would like to thank you for your support and participation. Past funds generated from membership and the writing competition have allowed AATSP-RI to offer travel stipends, as well as our new summer curriculum grant. So by sending students, you are supporting your colleagues. Furthermore, we believe that events such as this inspire our students to continue expanding their knowledge of Spanish, and allow our members to showcase their star pupils!

I would be most grateful if you would pass this on to any colleagues who are not on our mailing list.
